After
three weeks of disappointing performances, EMCC put all
three facets of the game together to win by seven wickets in
the late summer sunshine. The skipper won the toss and chose
to bowl first, but for once EMCC’s openers were unable to
make a break through. An inspired bowling change meant Doug
“return of the” Macintyre and Geoff “the silver fox” Morris
were in the attack after only six overs and both produced
inspired performances. Doug was the first to strike as he
found away swing and seam movement, which was virtually
unplayable, before Geoff took three wickets in a rush. A
fantastic catch from Colin “the crab” Smith was critical but
Geoff was able to flight the ball and vary his pace, with
his four wickets each being for ducks. Doug took two further
wickets, caught at slip and by the keeper respectively and
the responsibility fell to Gary “angry” Knapper to keep up
the high standards. Gary immediately found the right line
and length, and his variations in pace nearly produced an
early result before Paul bowled the dangerous Brian and Gary
swept away the tail.
On the
back of some poor recent batting displays Andy “winter nets”
Grant and Matt “bully” Yelland got EMCC off to the perfect
start with a partnership of 46 runs. Matt was particularly
harsh on anything short and Andy made a conscious effort to
see off the dangerous leg spinner, Ahmad, before Matt was
caught at point. Colin “the crab” built on his excellent
display in the field to top score with 32 runs, and bar a
wobble in the 29th over when Andy and “the arm”
fell in quick succession EMCC made it home for the sixth win
of the season.
