EMCC’s fifth
win of the season was their most pleasing so far. After some fine
individual exploits in previous victories, every one of Epsom’s ten
men contributed with bat, ball or gloves in a strong all round
performance.
When Matt
Yelland (12) was dismissed by the impressive Moore after a lively
start, Mark Johnson (35) and Andy Grant (28) compiled their second
successive fifty partnerships. While both batsmen lacked the fluency
demonstrated the previous week, their 91 run partnership (on a
trickier wicket) was just as valuable, and enabled EMCC’s middle
order to play with great freedom.
Ian Briggs
helped to up the rate with a quick fire 14 (11 balls), including a
mammoth six over long off. Steve Darke then played a typical Rich
Darke innings, looking strong off his pads and down the ground as he
struck 25 (21 balls). While a few wickets tumbled in the closing
overs, Mike Darke stood firm with a solid 21*.
With only ten
men on the field, EMCC’s bowling had to be tight from the off, and
the openers didn’t disappoint. Morden soon found themselves 3-3, as
Paul Pennock and James Yelland made use of Old School Lane’s uneven
bounce to rattle through the top order.
When Edmed
(28) and Ware (15) began to chip away at the EMCC total with a
strong fifth wicket partnership, there were a few nervous faces in
field. The evergreen Geoff Morris quickly returned smiles to them
however, as one of his best spells of the season saw him return
figures of 4-18. Two catches were taken by Jim Yelland, the second
of which confirmed his status as EMCC’s smartest slip fielder (and
moved him to the top of the catching charts). Tom Hill also held a
tough chance (removing the dangerous Ware) in a fine return behind
the stumps, during which only one bye was shipped.
After Mike
Darke had been unlucky to finish wicket less in a clever bowling
display, Ian Briggs wrapped up the Morden tail with two late scalps.
No catches
were dropped, the ground fielding was tight, and the sun was
shining. A good afternoon’s work.

FACT OF THE DAY 1:
This was the
first time this season that all of the top six EMCC batsmen reached
double figures. I’m sure if I had the scorebook going back further;
it would be a lot longer than that since this last happened…
UNINTERESTING
FACT OF THE DAY 2:
Ian Briggs
recorded figures of 2-11 for the second successive match (his first
two bowling spells for the club). Jay-Z recorded the same figures in
his only performance thus far this term.
